What kind of implants are used in breast augmentation surgeries?
With the developing technology for breast augmentation, there are many options. Various options are available, depending on the person’s medical history, body shape, and aesthetic goals. Breast augmentation patients can choose between saline implants and silicone implants. Choosing the type of implant usually comes down to personal preferences and the surgeon’s opinion.
Saline breast implants; filled with sterile saline. Saline breast implants can be pre-filled to a predetermined size or filled during surgery to allow for minor changes in implant size.
Structured saline-filled breast implants; It is filled with sterile saline, but has a structure inside to pretend to be filled with a soft, elastic silicone gel. This structure allows them to hold their shape better than conventional saline implants.
Silicone gel filled breast implants; It is filled with a soft, elastic gel and is available in various shapes and degrees of hardness. All silicone gel breast implants are pre-filled and patients may require a longer incision to insert a larger breast augmentation implant.
Adhesive gel silicone gel-filled breast implants, also known as gummy bear or “stable shape” implants; It is filled with a sticky gel made of cross-linked silicone molecules that make it slightly thicker and firmer than conventional silicone gel implants. This allows them to hold their shape better. These silicone implants have been available in many parts of the world since 1992. Autologous fat transfer; It takes fat from a region of the body where fat cells are abundant, such as thighs, abdomen and hips, through liposuction.
After a preparation period, fat cells are injected into the breast. In many patients, the amount of fat available for augmentation may be less than the volume achievable with an implant. Not all of the transferred fat is expected to survive the grafting process, and in some cases it may be necessary to repeat the surgery to achieve larger volumes of enlargement. For people with any sagging breasts, the plastic surgeon can combine any of these breast augmentation options with a breast lift.
For what purposes is breast augmentation surgery performed?
Women can opt for breast implants to make their breasts look bigger and better. On the other hand, if one or both breasts have been removed for breast cancer, they may need breast augmentation for breast reconstruction (combination of reconstructive and cosmetic indications).
For this reason, breast augmentation surgery is performed in the following cases;
If the woman feels that her breast is too small
If your breasts have asymmetry
If you have had one or both breasts removed, possibly due to cancer
If there are changes in the size, tone or shape of the breast as a result of physiological processes such as aging, weight loss and childbearing.
In order to get the most realistic and satisfactory results, people should discuss the purpose of breast augmentation with their plastic surgeon.
How to prepare for breast augmentation surgery?
The surgeon will give detailed pre-operative instructions, answer any questions you may have, will take a medical history and perform a physical examination to determine if the patient is suitable for surgery.
To help detect and monitor changes in breast tissue, the plastic surgeon may recommend a baseline mammogram before surgery and another mammogram a few months after surgery.
Before the procedure, the surgeon will ask the patient to stop smoking at least six weeks before undergoing cosmetic surgery and avoid taking aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs that can increase bleeding, to better support healing.
Regardless of the type of surgery to be performed, hydration is very important before and after
surgery for a safe recovery. For breast augmentation using autologous fat transfer, it may be desirable to wear a special bra to expand the skin and tissue around the breast to prepare the breasts for fat injection.
How is breast augmentation performed?
Patients who choose to have breast augmentation surgery will most likely have the operation performed in an outpatient surgical center. Most of the time, people can go home the same day as the procedure.
Since the procedure will most likely be performed under general anesthesia, no pain is felt. The patient should follow their surgeon’s instructions to prepare 24 hours before the procedure.
The surgeon will place the breast implants using one of three options:
under the breast (under the breast)
axillary (armpit)
periareolar (in the tissue surrounding the nipples)
The surgeon will then create a pocket, separating the breast tissue from the chest muscles and tissue. Implants will be placed inside these pockets and centered within the breasts.
If saline implants are preferred, the surgeon replaces them after successful placement of the implant will fill it with sterile saline solution. Silicones are already self-filled.
After the breast augmentation surgeon has successfully placed the implants, he or she will close the incisions with sutures and then securely bandage them with surgical tape and surgical adhesive. During the recovery period, the patient will be monitored and will be released to go home after the anesthesia has passed sufficiently.
